Nebulizers provide great help to those with breathing challenges, but they must be cleaned and maintained for them to work correctly. Keeping your nebulizer clean prevents the jet or mesh holes in your nebulizer from becoming clogged, which would reduce how much medicine is released. We’re here to provide you with everything you need to know about caring for a nebulizer. Keep reading to learn more!

1. Follow the Manufacturer’s Recommendations

Always make sure you are following the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean your nebulizer, parts and accessories. Do not use the nebulizer masks longer than is recommended. Some accessories are meant to be thrown away after 5 to 7 uses, such as disposable masks, while other regular masks can be used for up to 6 months.

2. Wash and Rinse After Every Use

Cleaning your nebulizer daily can help prevent bacteria growth. The nebulizer needs to be rinsed after every use. Rinse the nebulizer cup, mask, or mouthpiece in warm, soapy water using a mild detergent or dish soap. Rinse it thoroughly and let it air dry. Do not clean the tubing that connects the nebulizer to the air compressor, it is not necessary.

3. Disinfect the Nebulizer Every Week

In addition to daily cleaning, you will need to disinfect your nebulizer weekly after completing your daily washing of the equipment. Before doing so, make sure you refer to your nebulizer’s manual for instructions. To disinfect your equipment, soak all the nebulizer parts (except the mask, tubing and compressor) in one-part distilled white vinegar and three-parts hot water for an hour. Afterward, rinse thoroughly and let it air dry on a paper towel.

4. Store Medicines in a Cool, Dry Place

Always make sure that you are following the manufacturer’s recommendations for the use and care of your nebulizer. It is important to store all of your medicines in a cool, dry place and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Use only FDA-approved medicines
  • Check to make sure medicines have not expired, are intact and undamaged
  • Make sure to check your medicine for discoloration
  • If you noticed anything different about the appearance of your medicines, dispose of them properly

5. Change the Nebulizer Filters

It is very important to change your nebulizer filter regularly, so that you can continue breathing clean air, as it is essential for the effective treatment of asthma and other respiratory conditions. The cleaner the filter, the less work your breathing machine has to do, which will allow it to have a longer life span. When buying new filters for your nebulizer, remember that:

  • Only purchase air filters that are intended for the specific machine that you use. Yorhom can help you find the right ones for your nebulizer.
  • Filters need to be changed on a regular basis. Consult the owner’s manual for the recommended changing instructions. If the filter appears dirty before your regularly scheduled change out, replace it anyway.
  • Keep extra filters on hand to ensure the safest possible treatment. Filters come in packs of 3, 5 or 10 for your convenience.
  • When traveling, pack spare filters and make sure your air filter is clean before heading out on your adventure.

6. Clean Your Air Compressor

Before you start cleaning your air compressor, make sure the unit is unplugged. Keep the air compressor clean by wiping it with a damp cloth as needed. Do not put the air compressor on the floor during your treatments or while storing your system. Make sure you check the air compressor’s filters as needed and replace or clean the filter according to the directions for your equipment supplier. If you have questions about this step, the experts at Yorhom can help!

And that’s it! You’ve thoroughly cleaned and disinfected your nebulizer system, ensuring safer and more effective use as well as a longer life span for your unit.
